Dante's Divine Comedy: Purgatorio

Purgatorio

Having escaped from Hell, Dante and Virgil arrive on the shores of Mount Purgatory and begin clambering up the rock face until they reach the two terraces of Ante-Purgatory, where souls not yet satisfactorily reconciled with God must wait to begin their ascent. The angelic guardian of Peter's Gate, the entrance to Purgatory, marks Dante's forehead with seven Ps, one for each capital sin, before the poets wend their way up the northern side of the mountain into the seven terraces purging Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Covetousness, Gluttony and Lust. Once all his markings have been wiped away by the sweep of angel wings, Dante is able to scale the summit and finds himself in the Earthly Paradise. Reunited with Beatrice, he prepares to enter Paradise.
